A breast cancer awareness workshop was held on 3rd January, 2009 at Geeta Gyan Mandir, Tulsipur, Cuttack. It was jointly organized by the Lioness Club of Cuttack and The Indian Cancer Winners’ Association-Delhi.
Lioness Mrs.Subhadra Devi, the innovative President of Lioness Club of Cuttack, presided over the meet. She stressed on the frightening rate of increase in cancer and lack of cancer awareness amongst the public. To remove the fear associated with cancer in the masses she said that the Lioness club of Cuttack would take up a project and this was first of the series of programme that she wishes to organize.
Lion Mr Sunil Santuka, past District Governor, Lions Club, was the Chief Guest for the occasion and supported the program. He was sure that such activity would benefit the society. He expressed his desire that more such clubs should participate in such program.
Dr Pawan Gupta, Senior Consultant Cancer Surgeon and President of the Indian Cancer Winners’ Association was the Chief Speaker. The Indian Cancer Winners’ Association is established with a mission to “Win over cancer” and to change the way cancer is perceived by the society. The association wishes to establish chapters all over the Country with professional public partnership.
Studies indicate that as India becomes westernized, the incidence rate for breast cancer increases. A 2005 study conducted by the International Association of Cancer Research, based in Lyon, France, projected that there would be 250 000 cases of breast cancer in India by 2015, a 3% increase per year. Currently, India reports roughly 100 000 new cases annually.
He said that cancer is a lifestyle disease like any other chronic disease related to food, physical activity, habits like tobacco and alcohol, and stress. It is highly curable if detected early. It is a pity that patients come to the doctor in late stage. He stressed the need for every woman to be breast aware and any suspicious lesion (lump, discharge from nipple, thickening of skin etc) should be consulted by the specialist.
The other dignitaries present in the occasion Lion President Gaurhari Dalai, Lioness Puspalat Pati, Lioness Mrs Sudipta Das, Lioness Mrs Indra Nayak, Lioness Mrs Himanshubala Patnaik, Lion Sri Dharam Pal Gupta were happy to organize the meet and expressed their desire to hold such meets more frequently for the benefit of the society at large.
