Breast Health Quiz

All ladies need to be aware and proactive about their breast health. So, do you believe you are well aware of breast health? Take this quiz and find out.

Starting today, I will keep adding a few questions that test your knowledge about breast health. Your score on this self-test is not as important as the fact that it will enhance and solidify your knowledge of breast health. It may even teach you something that you did not know already.

I am not an expert on breast health and will not claim that I know more than any one of you. All that I can assure is that all these questions are based on information derived from reliable sources on the internet. In case you find a discrepancy and have a different view on any of the answers please feel free to leave a comment. Let's make this an interactive session where we get to share our knowledge on breast health.

ANSWERS 1-5

A1. FALSE. Males do get breast cancer, only it's much rarer. For every 100 women who have breast cancer, only one man may have it. So, if you are a man and feel there is any abnormality in your breasts, do check with a doctor.

A2. FALSE. The risk of breast cancer does increase with age. Those above the age of 40 years are at higher risks than younger women. However, breast cancer has been seen even in prepubertal girls. No age is immune to breast cancer. If you are 20 years or more remember to do a self exam of your breast each month.

A3. FALSE. There is no sure-fire way to prevent breast cancer. However, studies have demonstrated that the drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene can prevent breast cancer in women who have an increased risk of developing the disease. Because there are no guarantees and potentially serious side effects of the drugs (tamoxifen brings with it an increased risk of cancer of the lining of the uterus, a blood clot in the lung and a blood clot in a major vein), women who are not at increased risk should probably not take the drugs. The National Cancer Institute is currently conducting a clinical trial of tamoxifen and raloxifene, to compare the effectiveness and risks of the two drugs in breast cancer prevention.Till we know more about cancer prevention, remember the mantra "Early detection and treatment of breast cancer is the key to better survival."

A4. FALSE. There is no correlation between breast size and breast cancer.

A5. TRUE. Every 6.5 minutes one woman in India is diagnosed with breast cancer. The important message here is that 21 out of the 22 women can survive breast cancer better simply by detecting the disease in its early stages. Learn how breast cancer can be detected early.

THE incidence varies in the rural and urban population based registry. The incidence rate in urban population is ranging between 1 in 22 to 1 in 28 women to have breast cancer. In rural population 1 in 80 women are likely to have breast cancer. This is a clear indication that breast cancer is a lifestyle disease and if we take care we may prevent it.

By detecting the disease in early stage number of ladies are winning over breast cancer.
