The 3rd Annual Walk by the Indian Cancer Winners' Association- Ghaziabad Noida Chapter saw people coming from all walks of life to join the walk and show their solidarity and resolve to win over cancer.

Fighting Delhi's cold, thousands of enthusiastic supporters had gathered at the NOIDA Sports Stadium by 7 AM. Music and dance filled the air as the participants got ready for the walk. The musical group was led by Shri Omkar Sir and his team. The energetic music got many cancer winners' into a dance and helped show their courage and lively spirits.

The walk was flagged off by the Chief Guest for the occasion - Dr Kanchan Saran, City Magistrate of Noida City, in the presence of Income Tax commissioner, Noida Sh. B.K. Dikshit, Mrs Alka Tandon, Mrs Smita Singh and I CAN WIN National President, Dr Pawan Gupta.

Hot air balloons carrying the positive message of I CAN WIN rose up to the sky with everyone cheering 'I CAN WIN'. Over a thousand enthusiastic participants made the walk a success.

Just a mere suspicion of having any form of Cancer sends shivers to anybody and it is natural to feel intimidated and terrorized. Based on the cancer registry data it is estimated that there will be about 800,000 new cancers cases in India every year. It means that at present total Cancer patient as on today will be round 3 times of this figure i.e. 24,00,000. Yet, many of deaths due to cancer can be avoided. Over 30% of all cancers can be prevented by amending our lifestyle. Others can be saved if detected early & promptly treated. Even with late stage cancer, the suffering of patients can be relieved with good palliative care.

Cancer can affect anyone – young or old, rich or poor – and represents a tremendous burden on the patients, their families and the society. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, particularly in developing countries. It is the time when we must act ; else it may be too late!

Cancer is no more a mysterious disease. A lot of developments and researches have taken place in the past two decades. We have new surgical techniques, new drugs, new radiation machines all which has changed the outcome of the disease and improved survival as well as quality of life. However the problem is that, still, patients come for treatment at late stage when cure becomes difficult. If we want to win over cancer we will have to change this scenario. This is possible only by creating awareness amongst the public and propagating the message “BE CAREFUL BUT NOT FEARFUL”.
One third of the cancer in India are preventable. The seven steps of prevention include:
• Step 1: Don't use tobacco
• Step 2: Eat a variety of healthy foods
• Step 3: Stay active and maintain a healthy weight
• Step 4: Protect yourself from the sun
• Step 5: Get immunized
• Step 6: Avoid risky behaviors
• Step 7: Get screened regularly

A cancer patient can spend his or her life in two ways – one is silently, pitying herself/himself, the other is to come out and speak aloud about the fight, to win over this dreaded disease. Today we have so many cancer winners with us and I really congratulate them for having taken this path of speaking out.
To reach out to the people at large, The Indian Cancer Winners’ Association – Ghaziabad Chapter are organizing a mass awareness program to ‘Win Over Cancer’ on 20th of November 2011. The objective of this program is to build a national grassroots movement that will take cancer from isolation to collaboration. Together with stakeholders, transforming cancer from obscurity to priority is the message that will be conveyed as it is because of this stigma, cancer patients do not come forward to announce that they are winners.

I CAN WIN - WALK will be a platform for cancer winners to show to the world their ability to fight and win and voice their message on:

• Cancer is not a killer, what kills is carelessness, delayed diagnosis, denied or wrong treatment.
• It is possible to win over cancer

• Adopt a healthy lifestyle and be a winner.

Women's Health Workshop at Jesus & Mary College, Delhi

On 5th November 2011, the I CAN WIN Association conducted a Women's Health Workshop at Jesus & Mary College, Delhi. The emphasis during this workshop was on two of the major types of cancer that affect women in India - breast cancer and cervical cancer.
